Science & Research

We have a direct connection with many universities most notably the University of Reading.

We are constantly experimenting to broaden our knowledge of what is possible in the agroecological context and sharing our experiences.

The main areas of research are:

weed biology

heritage cultivar traits

biodiversity monitoring

select species re-introduction

diverse populations over time and space

self organising nature

The importance of nutrition and health providing characteristics of food is gaining wider interest, sometimes referred to a nutrient density. Heritage cultivars are often said to be more flavoursome and perhaps nutritious, although the evidence for this is missing.

Perhaps we need to lean into our personal tasting skills to assess what suits our own bodies. Indeed we are happy to do this with wine, why not be more intuitive about food?

"Medicine is not health care, medicine is sick care, food is health care." Prof Wendy Russell

We are looking for varieties which have high disease resistance, high root mass, excellent weed competitiveness, good flavour, and optimum yield.
